The head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, assured Security Council members and Iraqi voters Nov. 23 that parliamentary elections were conducted in a fair and free manner. "The October elections were evaluated as being sound in general," Hennis-Plasschaert said in the briefing, indicating there is no evidence of widespread fraud.  However, she warned of dire consequences if the post-election political deadlock remains and essential reforms are not implemented by the upcoming government.  The political deadlock started when the defeated parties…
An Iraqi court adjourned a hearing Sunday to allow a man to formalize his religious marriage to a 12-year-old girl, while feminist activists protested in rejection of this phenomenon. The mother, who refuses to be identified, said her daughter Israa had been "raped" and that the girl's father kidnapped her. Lawyer Marwan Obeidi told AFP that the marriage can’t be formalized because the girl is a minor. The legal age for marriage in Iraq is 18 but can be lowered…
BAGHDAD — Iraq's influential Shiite cleric who emerged as a winner in last month's general elections on Thursday called on the country's myriad pro-Iran Shiite armed factions to disband if they want to join his upcoming government. Muqatada al-Sadr also asked the factions to hand over their weapons to the government-sanctioned umbrella known as Popular Mobilization Forces. In turn, he also asked the PMF to "purify" its ranks from "undisciplined elements" and surrender "corrupt individuals" to the judiciary. The militias…
Hundreds of Iraqi demonstrators protesting the results of the parliamentary elections have closed one of the three gates of the Green Zone in Baghdad, following failed attempts to storm the heavily-guarded area, Anadolu Agency reported on Friday. Iraqi security forces ramped up reinforcements at the gate near the Ministry of Planning as a precautionary measure. The demonstrators erected tents following their attempt to burst into the Green Zone, which includes government and ministries' headquarters, as well as foreign missions and officials' residences.…

Iraq timeline: a week of escalating violence Monday, 08 November 2021 21:17

Iraq has been rocked by several high-profile attacks and deadly clashes over the past seven days, including an assassination attempt on Prime Minister Mustafa Al Kadhimi on Sunday. A period marked by violence began on October 30, when rockets were fired into a residential area of the capital Baghdad near the Green Zone, which houses diplomatic missions and Iraqi government buildings. No casualties were reported, but the violence that has followed is especially worrying as the country struggles with protests, a rejection of results in…
The failed assassination attempt against Iraq’s prime minister at his residence on Sunday has ratcheted up tensions following last month’s parliamentary elections where the Iran-backed militias were the biggest losers. Helicopters circled in the Baghdad skies throughout the day, while troops and patrols were deployed around Baghdad and near the capital’s fortified Green Zone, where the overnight attack occurred. Supporters of the Iran-backed militias held their ground in a protest camp outside the Green Zone to demand a vote recount.…
An exploding drone aimed at the Iraqi prime minister’s house has failed to kill him, the government has said. Mustafa al-Kadhimi was reported by the government to be unharmed. In a statement released early on Sunday, the government said the drone tried to hit al-Kadhimi’s home in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, which houses foreign embassies and government offices. Residents of Baghdad heard an explosion followed by gunfire in the area. Two Iraqi officials told the Associated Press that seven…
BAGHDAD, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi escaped unharmed in an assassination attempt by armed drone in Baghdad on Sunday, officials said, in an incident that dramatically raises tension in the country weeks after a general election disputed by Iran-backed militia groups. Six members of Kadhimi's personal protection force stationed outside his residence in the Green Zone were wounded, security sources told Reuters. Three drones were used in the attack, including two that were intercepted and downed…
BAGHDAD — Supporters of Iran-backed militias clashed Friday with Iraqi security forces outside the fortified Green Zone complex as tensions spiked over the results of national elections last month. At least 125 people were injured, according to Iraq’s Health Ministry. Kataib Hezbollah, one of the most powerful militias, said three people had been killed. Iran-backed groups have been demanding a recount of the Oct. 10 parliamentary election results, which saw Shiite Muslim cleric Moqtada al-Sadr’s party secure the most seats…
Basra (Iraq) (AFP) – In Iraq's southern province of Basra, the oil flows freely but little of the wealth trickles down to the people, and many struggle to make ends meet. Sajad, 17, who lives in Basra city, says he "has no future" and no present. Like other young people, he says he just survives, a living emblem of the city's maladies. Basra province produces about 70 percent of crude oil in Iraq, itself the second biggest exporter in the Middle…
DUBAI, Nov 1 (Reuters) - The Iraqi government plans to sign energy contracts worth tens of billions of dollars with Saudi Arabia, the state newspaper Al-Sabaah reported on Monday, citing Iraqi Oil Minister Ihsan Abdul Jabbar. Baghdad is discussing a partnership with Saudi Aramco to explore and develop natural gas fields in Iraq's western desert, it said. The Iraqi government is also in talks with Saudi Arabia's Acwa Power to build water desalination plants and solar energy stations in Iraq,…
