Heartbreaking photo shows humanitarian crisis looms in Iraq

The Islamic State faces defeat.

But a humanitarian crisis looms for survivors, many of them children, who are suffering from dehydration and malnutrition in northern Iraq. U.S-backed forces have entered the final stages of the Mosul offensive to retake the second-largest city.

In addition, the fight for refugees to flee the city is complicated by the threat of suicide bombings. ISIS controls less than a square mile of land in the city, according to the Associated Press.

“None of the previous battles were like this,” said Iraqi Maj. Faris Aboud, working at a small field hospital, according to the AP. “In a single day we received 300 wounded,” Aboud said. “For me, seeing the wounded children is the hardest, we see children who have lost their entire families under the rubble, they have no one now.”

Iraq's U.S.-backed military seized the ruins of the famed al-Nuri mosque in Mosul on Thursday and declared the end to the Islamic State's self-declared caliphate three years after the militant group stormed into the country. Iraqi forces are continuing their push to clear militants out of Mosul's Old City.

The Mosul offensive began in October and posed a major test for the country's military, which has been backed by U.S. advisers and air support from the U.S.-led coalition of nations.

ISIS seized Mosul in June 2014, when the radical group swept into Iraq and routed Iraq's military.
